Why Do Some People Change the Name of Their Shopify Dropshipping Store?
Why would people change the name of their Shopify dropshipping store?
You might be wondering that right now while reading this.
Well, I’ll give you a few reasons bellow, and I think it will make sense then!
- Their store isn’t working, and they want to start over.
- They want to go from a general to a niche store or visa versa, and their current name doesn’t fit their new store.
- You could also want to change the name of your store because you came up with a better one.
- Or you’re going so great that you can purchase an even smaller and catchier domain name and want to change your Shopify name to that as well.
Do you see now that there are plenty of reasons why people might want to change the name of their Shopify dropshipping store?
Maybe one day (or today), you got one of these points as well.
But should you can change the name of your store? Let’s find out.
Should You Change the Name of Your Store?
Let’s see if you should change the name of your store!
First off, you need to decide which one fits with you:
Does your store get any traffic and sales? Basically, do some people recognize your store name or not?
I don’t have much to say about this one.
If you’re getting sales and traffic, and you think people recognize your store name, then you will need to think this through if you want to change your store name or not.
You need to think about your customers!
How are they going to respond if you’re going to change the name of your store?
But most likely, you’re part of this group that wants to change the name of their store:
You’re not getting any sales, and want to try something new with a new store name
If so, then it’s a great idea to start over.
You can keep all the things that you learned from this store and apply it to your next one!
Make it better and better.
But don’t forget that building a dropshipping store takes time. Don’t change names already if you didn’t see any sales the first month!
The only thing left to decide now is if you should open a brand new Shopify store, or if you just want to change the name of your store.
For some people starting over from scratch (opening a new Shopify store) is the better choice because you won’t have all the data from your previous store there.
For others, that doesn’t matter that much.

At the top of this page, you will find your current store name.

Step 4. Check your store
Now you will see your new name appear on the top of your Shopify dropshipping store.
But what about changing the domain name of your Shopify store? Let’s find that out now!
How to Change the Domain Name of Your Shopify Dropshipping Store?
Now that you know how to change the name of your Shopify dropshipping store, it’s time to change your domain name as well!
For example, why would you keep playingwithdogs.com if your new store name is cats and food?
That would be a bit weird for your store visitors!
Keep in mind, one thing that you won’t be able to change is your .myshopify.com URL that you use to login.
If you added a custom domain to your store, like I’ll explain to you below, and selected it as your primary domain, then the original .myshopify.com URL is never seen by your store visitors.
You will be the only one who is going to see this URL.
If it’s important to you that the .myshopify.com URL matches your new store name, then you will need to create a new Shopify account.
There are ways to duplicate your Shopify store so you won’t lose anything you have done so far!
If you want to learn more about duplicating your Shopify store, then I suggest reading this help guide from Shopify.
Now let’s start with changing your domain name!
Step 1. Purchase a new domain name
You might have already done this, or maybe you didn’t yet.
The first step is going to be purchasing a new domain name.
I suggest you use Namecheap as your domain registrar.
I personally use them as well, and I think they are great (and cheap).
Also, I suggest you purchase the .com domain extension of your new store name.
It’s one of the most popular domain extensions. (Source)
If your domain name is not available, but you really like the store name that you came up with, then you could try other variations of that name or start brainstorming again.
One last tip, don’t forget to search for coupon codes (for example, take a look at Honey). This way, you will hopefully pay less for your domain name!
Step 2. Go to domains
All you have to do to connect your domain to Shopify is going to Online Store (under Sales Channels) -> Domains
Step 3. Connect your domain
After that, either press connect existing domain, transfer domain, or buy a new domain.
- Connect existing domain = If you have already bought your domain on, for example, Namecheap, and you want to keep it there, then you can connect it to Shopify this way.
- Transfer domain = Same as above, but you can choose this if you want to transfer your domain to Shopify instead of keeping it on Namecheap.
- Buy new domain = This speaks for itself, if you don’t have a domain yet and you don’t want to buy it somewhere else, then you can purchase it straight on Shopify.
Step 4. Double-check
Those were all the steps for connecting your new domain name to your Shopify dropshipping store!
It’s important now to double-check your domain and see if it’s correctly going to your store.
How to Delete a Shopify Dropshipping Store?
If you decide not to change the name of your store but to delete your store instead, then follow me below!

Step 2. Go to plan and permissions
Then scroll down until you see this:
And there you can press on close store!
